Here is a website that will help you with Friday's math lesson on rounding whole numbers and decimals. Remember the steps involved:
Step 1: Underline the digit to which we are rounding.
Step 2: Look at the digit to the right.
Step 3: If the digit is 5 or higher, round up (increase the underlined digit by 1). If the digit is less than 5, round down (leave the underlined digit the same).
Note: All the remaining digits to the right now become zero. So, if we are asked to round 546 to the nearest hundred, these are the steps:
Step 1: Underline the 5 (hundreds place).
Step 2: Look at the 4 (digit to the right).
Step 3: Since the 4 is less than 5, we round round, leaving the 5 the same. The remaining digits to the right now become a 0.
The answer is 500.
When rounding decimals, the same method applies. The only difference is that instead of replacing the remaining digits to the right to zero, you simply drop them.
As an example, if we are asked to round 32.45627 to the nearest hundredths, we:
Step 1: Underline the 5 (hundredths place).
Step 2: Look at the 6 (digit to the right).
Step 3: Since 6 is 5 or higher, we round up (increase the underlined digit by 1), and drop the remaining digits.
The answer is 32.46
Here is a worksheet you can download and do as extra practice. Page 2 has the answers.
Hope this helps. If it's still a little confusing, go over it with your parents/guardians. We'll go over it again in class on Monday.
Have a great weekend!
